How it changed
A personification of a body of water whose identity is genuinely unsettled. The Great Green has long been translated as the Mediterranean Sea, but a strong case reads it instead as the lagoons and flooded marshland of the Delta, and the two readings put the god in quite different places. Either way he stands for the still, fertile water rather than the running river.
