What it was
Built from nothing on virgin ground by Akhenaten as the capital of a state devoted to the Aten alone, and abandoned almost immediately after his death. The Amarna Letters, an archive of diplomatic correspondence in Akkadian, were found here.

Roughly seventeen years in the mid-fourteenth century BCE
What is actually there now
The most completely excavated ancient Egyptian city there is, precisely because it was occupied briefly and never built over.
