The intellectual centre of solar religion and the home of the Ennead, the creation account that became the standard one. Its priesthood shaped the Pyramid Texts and the theology of divine kingship.
When it mattered most
Old Kingdom, and enormously influential long after
What is actually there now
Almost nothing. One standing obelisk of Senusret I in a small park, with the rest quarried away over centuries and the site built over by greater Cairo. The most important theological centre in Egypt is the least visible.
