What it was
The capital of unified Egypt for most of the Old Kingdom, and the home of Ptah, the creator who thinks and speaks the world. Its name, from the pyramid town of Pepi I, is where the Greek name for the whole country ultimately comes from.
When it mattered most
Old Kingdom capital, and an administrative centre for three thousand years
What is actually there now
An open-air museum with a colossal fallen Ramesses II and an alabaster sphinx, in a palm grove. The city itself is under fields and silt.
