What it was

The burial ground of Memphis, holding the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the first large stone building in the world, designed by Imhotep. The Pyramid Texts were first carved here, in the pyramid of Unas.

Old Kingdom, and in use for over three thousand years

What is actually there now

One of the richest archaeological sites on earth, still producing major finds, including large caches of animal mummies and intact Late Period burials.
