The feather of Maat

mꜣꜥt

What it actually depicts

A single ostrich tail feather, upright.

What it meant

Truth and cosmic order. It is the sign used to write the word maat, and the goddess wears it or is replaced by it entirely.

Where you see it

On the head of Maat. On the balance at the judgement. In the hand of the king, offered to a god, in the ritual of presenting maat.

What gets said that is wrong

Not a symbol of lightness, which is the reading the weighing scene invites in English. The point is that maat has a specific weight and the heart must MATCH it, not be lighter than it. A heart lighter than truth is as much a failure as a heavy one in some readings of the balance.
