Was sceptre
wꜣsWhat it actually depicts
A straight staff with a forked base and an angled animal head at the top, most likely a stylised canid, possibly a Set animal.
What it meant
Dominion, power, and the wellbeing that comes of holding it.
Where you see it
Held by gods in almost every standing figure. Its shaft is used architecturally as the pole that holds up the sky sign at the edge of a scene.
What gets said that is wrong
Not a generic staff of office. Gods hold was and kings hold crook and flail, and the distinction is consistent enough to be diagnostic when identifying a damaged figure.
