Tyet, the knot of Isis

tjt

What it actually depicts

Close to an ankh, but with the two side arms folded down. Probably a knotted cloth, and often read as a menstrual cloth or girdle.

What it meant

The protection of Isis.

Where you see it

Amulets, characteristically in red jasper or carnelian, placed at the throat of a mummy. Alternating with djed pillars in decorative bands.

What gets said that is wrong

Often catalogued as a variant ankh. It is a separate sign with its own spell in the Book of the Dead, and the red material is specified by the spell rather than chosen for looks.
