What it was
The burial place of Egypt's first kings and, from the Middle Kingdom, the reputed tomb of Osiris and the greatest pilgrimage site in the country. Egyptians who could not be buried there erected stelae so their names would stand in the god's presence.
When it mattered most
Middle Kingdom onward
What is actually there now
The temple of Seti I, which holds the Abydos King List and some of the finest surviving relief carving in Egypt, and the Osireion behind it.
