What it was

The island at the first cataract, Egypt's southern border and the point where the inundation was believed to be released from caverns below. It was also a garrison town, a customs post and the site of a Jewish military colony in the Persian period whose Aramaic papyri survive.

When it mattered most

Old Kingdom onward, as a frontier

What is actually there now

Ruins on the island, a nilometer cut into the rock, and the Aswan museum.
